About this event

This event is on Monday January 18, 2021.

The day begins at 8:30am with an Opening Ceremony on Zoom featuring:

• Congresswoman Jackie Speier

• Rev. Lorrie Owens, President of San Mateo NAACP

speaking about the importance of celebrating Dr. King in 2021.

Following this ceremony, volunteers will break into groups to work together (online or in-person) on various projects that benefit our local community. New this year, is an alternative educational project featuring a reading of “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Most projects will start at 10am and end by 12pm.

After signing up for either a community service or the educational project (please only sign up for one), you will receive further information from your project captain. If needed, community service forms are available. More information about the Day of Service and specific projects can be found at https://sites.google.com/view/mlkday2021/home/volunteer-information including information about our Book Drive and Magazine Drive.

COVID-19 Precautions: This event will comply with all San Mateo County health and safety guidelines. This includes San Mateo County’s health order requiring face coverings, social distancing, and limited gatherings. If required by conditions on MLK Day, some projects may have to be altered or cancelled.

Volunteers must register by January 10. Projects fill up quickly, so register early! Volunteers must sign up in advance, as we cannot accept walk-ins on the day of the event. You can share the Zoom link with your family and friends for the online opening ceremony.

Please note: Volunteer registration is open to members of the Peninsula Multifaith Coalition and their friends. During the registration, please select the member organization with which you are most closely affiliated. As our goal is to have a mix of volunteers at each project, please only register your immediate family.

If you would like to register a larger group, please sign up only 2 or 3 people per project so that you have smaller groups in several projects. This provides an experience with depth and allows each individual to interact with people of other faiths and to have an experience that can be shared in your larger group later. If a faith community signs up a large group for the same project, then this does not give your group the full experience. Thank you for understanding what the Peninsula Multifaith Coalition is all about.

Sponsored by the Peninsula Multifaith Coalition, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. The MLK Multifaith Day of Service and other community events are made possible by the generosity of member faith organizations and donors like you, who contribute to cover the cost of supplies.  A donation of $10 per person, or $20 per family is suggested. If you would like to donate, please click here. Thanks for your support!
